Mark is from upstate New York and started private training in drums in 1965. In 1971, Mark included studies in jazz drumming with Michael Gerardi and supplemented his education by attending the New York State Music Camps during the summers of 1975 and 1976, where he began formal training in Latin percussion and classical percussion under the supervision of Thomas Brown.

In 1976, Mark became a member of the New York Musician's Union and began performing professionally with local jazz musicians in big band and combo settings. He continued his studies at the College of St. Rose from 1977-1979 and majored in classical percussion and contemporary percussion ensemble performance with David S. Bittner, principal first percussionist with the Albany Symphony Orchestra. As a member of the Percussive Arts Society from 1977-1981, Mark performed in several contemporary percussion ensembles throughout New England. From 1979-1980, he attended the Boston Conservatory of Music and studied classical percussion performance with Arthur Press, Boston Symphony Orchestra and Walter Tokarczyk, Boston Pops Orchestra and majored in music education. In 1984, Mark graduated from the Berklee College of Music with a Bachelor of Music degree in Jazz Composition and Arranging. Mark has performed on tour throughout Asia, Europe, Africa, south America, the Middle East and the United States with various Asian and U.S artists.

In 1979, Mark began formal training in the martial arts at the Wah-lum School of Kung-fu and the Gin Soon Choo School of Tai Chi Chuan in Boston, Massachusetts. Mark continued his martial arts training in Kyoto, Japan at the In You Ryu Karate Dojo, Honbu with Grand Master Seiji Hirayama, Master Kentaro Yamamoto, Master Hiroyuki Inagaki and Master Kouzo Yamamoto.
